What to wear

What should you wear to brunch?

For everyday brunch, wear a comfortable outfit you would enjoy wearing for the rest of the day: jeans or trousers with a knit, a relaxed shirt with a skirt, or a simple dress with a useful layer. Let the venue and occasion decide how polished to make it.

A neighbourhood café usually gives you plenty of flexibility. A hotel brunch, celebration, or restaurant with a dress code may call for something more considered. Brunch is a meal at a time of day, so there is no single brunch uniform.

Check the setting and the rest of the plan

Consider whether you will sit outside, queue, walk there, or continue on to errands. An outfit needs to work beyond the table. If the weather is changeable, start with a layer you can comfortably carry or wear indoors.

For a birthday or another celebration, the host’s plans may matter more than the restaurant itself. Ask about a dress expectation if one has not been shared. You can acknowledge the occasion with a favourite piece or accessory without replacing the whole outfit.

Use one of these starting points

  • Relaxed café: your preferred jeans, a soft knit or T-shirt, and trainers or another comfortable shoe.
  • A polished restaurant: trousers with a shirt or textured knit, or a dress with shoes that suit the venue.
  • Outdoor table: a comfortable base outfit, a warm or light layer for the temperature, and footwear suited to the walk.
  • Brunch followed by a day out: clothes you can sit and move in, with a bag and outerwear that work for the longer plan.

Make familiar clothes feel intentional

Choose a focal piece you already like: a coloured cardigan, striped shirt, textured jacket, or printed skirt. Keep the other pieces easy to combine with it. You might roll a sleeve, try a comfortable tuck, or change shoes to adjust how relaxed the outfit feels.

Check the complete outfit with your coat. A favourite indoor combination can feel different once a bulky layer changes its shape. Comfort at the table matters too; try sitting before committing to a waistband or a short hem you keep adjusting.

Common mistakes to avoid

Do not dress for an imaginary photo shoot if the plan is a long walk and a café. Equally, do not assume every brunch is casual when the invitation describes a celebration or dress code. The real setting should lead.

Light colours, dresses, and particular prints are options, not requirements. Use the colours and shapes you enjoy, and repeat an outfit if it works. Your weekend does not need a new wardrobe category.

Where a general guide stops

A good brunch outfit depends on the venue, weather, occasion, and what happens after the meal. Start with clothes you like wearing and adjust only the details that the plan actually requires.
